 Blog #5 - Questions

Before I get started on a couple of the prompt questions that I've been thinking about for the last couple of days, I wanted to give a status update of where I'm at. For the last two days, I've continued working on the new piece. I've added acoustic guitar, strings/flute/synth (?), and will be recording vocals tomorrow (Wednesday). I was over at a friend's house over the weekend, who has a cat and I am horribly allergic. As a result, I have been having some pretty bad sinus issues and haven't been able to record vocals, so my itinerary is getting pushed back by a day or two. Otherwise, I've been really enjoying recording this instrumental. Here's where it is at as of today:

Now for the questions:

Based on your experience so far, what advice would you give to next year’s Hawken Project students?

Be prepared to face challenges. As easy as it may seem to do a project around something you love, just because it's enjoyable does not mean it isn't going to be hard or frustrating at times. This is real work and it takes a lot of energy to create a great product so it will be difficult. On the other hand, do not take yourself too seriously. As incredible as this product may be, understand that you are a high school student with limited resources. Do not be afraid to ask for help and be ready to leave things unfinished or at least slightly less than where you want them to be. It is okay for this project to not be your magnum opus.

What should they do to make the most of their projects?

Do something you enjoy. Don't do something you think will be easy, don't do something just because your friend is doing it, do something that you want to do and that you genuinely care about. Also, spend time with other people even if you're doing it alone. Any creative endeavor will be better with others and any creative product will be better with good feedback.
