Blog #4 - Mid-Process
Blog #4 - Mid-Process
The last 3 days (Wednesday - Friday) have been absolutely packed. On Wednesday I came back to the second song I was working on with fresh ears and decided to scrap it (at least for now). I don't think it felt the direction the project was going in and after much consultation with my parents about what was the best approach, I listened to my muse and went in another direction. This is next song is a bit closer to Lilies, but a little more based in the electric side of instrumentation. It is a song about how I still carry my younger self with me, and even if I'm nowhere near the same person, it's still important to look after that small piece of who I am. I started on Wednesday with writing lyrics and the guitar part (as I was starting from scratch) and after finalizing, I recorded the electric guitar part that is the center of the song. I knew at some point in the EP I wanted to use the brass-harp upright piano that is sitting in our front room, and I decided this was the perfect song to put it to use. I moved all my equipment downstairs and set up a close mic to the back of the piano to get the pure tone and a room mic to capture the sound that reverberated off the walls. I recorded the 'scratch takes' (non-final takes that help to frame the rest of the track during recording) but decided to call it a day after a couple of non-satisfactory takes. I came back Thursday and re-recorded the piano parts for the end of the song and all of the electric guitar to fix up the timing. Friday I spent mixing a while mixing both the new track and Lilies a bit more, but I had other commitments that took up my time later in the day so it was hard to dedicate a lot of time to anything but mixing. I'm hoping to finish up this new song by Wednesday of next week and get working on the final piece of the EP soon.
Here is a link to some of the inspirations for the new song:
