 Blog #3 - Difficulties

Both today and yesterday (Monday and Tuesday) have been the roughest part of the project for me so far. I played a show for School of Rock on Saturday and worked all day with Angus Williams on his soon-to-be-released project on Sunday. So to say the least, I am musically drained for the moment. On top of that, I had my AP Statistics exam on Tuesday, which made me even more tired. Moving past the complaints, it has sure been an interesting couple of days for the creative process. While working with Angus over the weekend, I showed him the idea I had been working on for this segment of the project. It still remains untitled, but as a filler name, I will call it the closer because that's where it will be placed on the album. Instead of working around an acoustic guitar, I decided to focus on a synth as the base of the track, and Angus really liked the sound so I decided to keep it. The sound is a major triad formed around whatever key I am playing on the piano, with a very warm timbre and a lot of glide, which makes a sweeping transition between notes. The reason I decided to use a synth as the center of the track is that the EP is themed around moving on, personal evolution, and life moving too quickly, so I am complimenting the conceptual idea with an acoustic to electric progression from song to song. The main inspirations for the instrumentation of the track are the 2010's house-inspired indie rock bands LCD Soundsystem and Car Seat Headrest. Here are a couple of tracks to listen to:

Lyrically, this song is about life slipping out from under me. I've been struggling with the idea of going off to college soon, and I'm trying to get it all out using harsh synths, heavy guitars, and lyrical symbolism. With how difficult it has been to get my creative energy going, I only got the main synth track recorded on Monday. I spent the entire morning rewriting lyrics and messing around with ideas I had worked on over the weekend, but nothing was flowing and I decided to scrap it. Today (Tuesday) was completely nullified by my AP test, which I was 100% drained after. I hope that by the next blog I will have a nearly completed version of this track, but for now, I don't have anything I feel is ready to present. Despite all the difficulties, I am still very excited to see how everything continues.

  1. What a busy couple of days! Creativity surely requires space and energy, so give yourself some grace on this! Hopefully today will offer you both! I also love how you are using this project to explore your feelings and give them musical voice.
