Blog #1 - Journey to the EP

Since my freshman year, I've been waiting for the freedom of participating in Hawken Projects. Even with all my excitement, it was only until early in my Junior year that I set my heart on creating an EP. Ever since I was little, I've always had the drive to put a creative product out into the world. Whether it be a youtube video or podcast, or, what I settled on, music, I've wanted to share the way I see the world with as many people as possible. As much as this project is an extension of that childhood goal, I'm incredibly excited to use this as an opportunity to challenge myself in the realm of production and songwriting. The first, and most important part of the process, is the aforementioned songwriting. While I have spent a great sum of hours noodling around on my guitar in the early morning attempting to create a hook, I have never, before this experience, pieced together a full song. Although my lyrics will be mostly prewritten, I plan to create every bit of melody, harmony, and rhythm in the next 3 weeks. Using my skills on guitar, keys, and bass, I will write and play nearly everything on the project with the exception of drums. I'm having my friend John Finely help me out with drum parts on 2 of the songs. Otherwise, I plan for this to be a self-written, performed, and produced piece of music. The only part of the writing to recording to releasing process that I will not be able to complete in the 3 week period is the actual release. There is a lengthy legal process tied to the release of a song or set of songs which is not able to happen in the time frame. I still plan on creating promotional material and working towards a full release in the future to my best ability. Personally, I am very nervous yet excited about the project. This is the biggest musical undertaking that I attempted, and especially with a deadline on my back, the pressure is definitely on. However, I am confident in my writing and production capabilities and can't wait to share my work with the greater Hawken community.
